Mark Hackett focuses his practice on employment law. For more than twenty years, he has guided employers through the maze of employment laws and regulations they face from before they hire their first employee until after they close their doors and the last employee leaves. Mark has extensive experience advising employers about the full range of employment law issues, including wage and hour laws, employee handbooks and workplace policies, medical and other leaves and employee performance.
Mark also represents employers appearing before administrative agencies or in court. Whether appealing an Employment Department award of unemployment benefits to a former employee, defending against a wage claim before the Bureau of Labor and Industries, enforcing a covenant not to compete or defending against a claim of sexual harassment in court, Mark has done it all.
Prior to joining Emerge Law Group, Mark worked as General Counsel and Human Resources Director for a large Portland natural foods manufacturer, owned his own law firm and was a partner at Davis Wright Tremaine, one of the Northwest’s largest law firms. Prior to law, Mark managed a family wholesale distribution business, gaining valuable experience as an employer and business owner.
“I believe in preparation and prevention. Putting effective employment policies and practices in place will prevent many of the mistakes that result in litigation or that make a lawsuit more difficult to win. A client will spend far more money, time and emotion on a single lawsuit, than on taking steps on the front end to get their employment policies and practices in order.”
